Leafs keep playoffs hope alive

The Leafs put on an 8 goal show at TD Banknorth Arena tonight with an 8-2 win over the struggling Boston Bruins.  The Leafs had 7 different goal scorers, and a 2 goal night for Nik Antropov.  Bryan McCabe tied a career high night with 4 points, including 1 goal.  Alex Steen also had a big night with 3 assists.

Boston opened the scoring midway through the first period with Peter Schaefer's 8th goal of the season.  The Leafs then took over and didn't look back.  Jason Blake tied the game 5 minutes later with his 13th of the season while on the powerplay.

Alexei Ponikarovsky opened the second period with his 15th of the year, only 1:17 in.  Bryan McCabe gave the Leafs a 3-1 lead shortly after with his 5th of the year while on the powerplay.  Matt Stajan and Nik Antropov would also add markers, their 14th and 25th of the season respectively. 

Darcy Tucker, Nik Antropov's second, and Mats Sundin would each score in the third to give the Leafs their 8-1 lead.  Sundin's goal was his 30th of the season, making it the 10th season in which he has scored 30 or more goals.  Phil Kessel added a late goal for the Bruins.

Vesa Toskala made 27 saves for his 27th win of the season.  The Leafs host the New Jersey Devils Saturday night at the Air Canada Center

Steen Re-Signs for 2 Years

Alex Steen has signed a 2 year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs worth 1.7 million dollars per year.  Steen was set to become a Restricted Free Agent at the end of the season.  Steen, 23, has 10 goals and 15 assists in 56 games for the Leafs this year.



Leafs blow out the Rangers

Nik Antropov had a night to remember with a hat trick as the Leafs took down the New York Rangers by a score of 6-2.  Alex Steen, Matt Stajan, and Mats Sundin scored the others.  Leafs netminder Vesa Toskala made 23 stops for his 3rd win in a row.

Stajan opened the scoring 3:30 into the first period with his 7th of the year.  7 minutes later Mats Sundin scored his team leading 14th goal of the season.  The Rangers would tie the game up late in the first period with goals from Girardi and Tyutin.

Nik Antropov gave the Leafs another lead with his 12th of the season on the powerplay, with Alex Steen and Alexei Ponikarovsky recording the assists.  Antropov doubled his goal tally on the night later in the period with his 13th of the year.

Early in the 3rd, Nik Antropov would give the Leafs a 5-2 lead with his 3rd goal of the game and first career hat trick.  Alex Steen added a late goal to finish the game off at 6-2.

The Leafs return to action Saturday night as they host the Boston Bruins at the Air Canada Center.
